Great Day with the children ~ Gan-Katan & Shorashim Prepare for Purim

On the Move with Ohr Chadash

After an exciting fall term at Hillcrest Jewish Center, Ohr Chadash packed its books and supplies and moved east along Union Turnpike to Hollis Hills Bayside Jewish Center.  Many things have changed at HHBJC since the school was there over a year ago.  The name may be a little different, but the warm welcome the school received, was the same as in the past.  Once we settled in it was time to start learning once again.

February is a very short month, but on Sunday, February 12, we held our annual school wide Tu B’Shevat Seder.   Gan-Katan and Shorashim enjoyed singing songs, an art project and a festive meal in their classroom.  The older children met in the HHBJC ballroom and ate a festive Seder meal.  Israeli biscuits, orange slices and grapes, representing two of the seven special foods of Israel, were served.  Four cups of grape juice were drunk throughout the meal.  The grape juice in four different colors, going from white to dark red, represented the changing seasons.  We read a special Haggadah for Tu B’Shevat containing stories from numerous sources and discussed the importance of trees in the past, present and future.

Following the Presidents’ Week break the children returned to Ohr Chadash ready to learn about Purim and Pesach and prepare for their special end of year presentations.

Gan Katan

This past Sunday, November 20th, the children of the Gan Katan class, in keeping with this month’s focus on Shabbat, personally decorated their Shabbat blessings and are bringing them home to enrich their own homes with the warmth of the Shabbat experience.

Afternoon in the Sukkah

“This past Wednesday with the Rabbis featured Rabbis Kogan and Romano in the HJC Sukkah. Rabbi Kogan encouraged the children to think about the difference between a house and a home. Rabbi Romano taught the children about the “Arba Minim”-Four Species used during Sukkot. Each child had an opportunity to make the brachot -blessings for the Sukkah and the lulav and etrog.”

On Wednesday, May 4, Ohr Chadash students participated in
Holocaust Remembrance Day program at ICCJ
On May 4, 2016 students from Ohr Chadash participated in a community wide commemoration that included Flushing Fresh Meadows, Hollis Hills Bayside Jewish Center, Hillcrest Jewish Center, and the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills. The guest speaker was Beth Lilach, Senior Director Education and Community Affairs of the Holocaust and Memorial Center of Nassau County, who spoke eloquently of the role that women played in rescue and treatment of those impacted by the Holocaust. We are proud that our students took part in this important program and thank the staff of Ohr Chadash for their preparation.
